Eligibility Criteria: To be eligible, they had to be 50-69 years of age men, to smoke five or more cigarettes per day at entry, and to give written informed consent. The exclusion criteria included a history of cancer or other serious disease limiting participation; use of vitamin E, vitamin A, or beta-carotene supplements in excess of predefined doses; and treatment with anticoagulant agents.
